Unique pieces of history in RR Auction past lot sales
RR Auction is known for always giving collectors the
opportunity to add amazing items to their “treasuries”, items that are not only
highly valuable, but incredibly rare as well. Owning a piece of history has
never been easier if you are one of RR Auction’s customers. This was the case
back in September 2010 when the company auctioned off a check signed by Abraham Lincoln. The document was signed on quite a busy day
for the future US President. According to RR Auction a lawsuit took place on
January 12, 1860 and Abraham Lincoln was a big part of it.
As it turns out,
Lincoln appeared before the Illinois Supreme Court to defend the Illinois
Central Railroad against a lawsuit filed by the state of Illinois. As it is
stated by RR Auction the lawsuit regarded the company’s failure to pay taxes in
1857. The 7 X 2.25 inches document was drawn on the Springfield Marine and Fire
Insurance Company and payable to Ruth, Matheny & Watson. It was accompanied
by a portrait of Lincoln and it was cloth matted and framed by Gallery of
History, reaching an overall size of 14 X 17.25 inches.
The check sold by RR Auction had a
punch hole to the left edge and a bit of scattered, light soiling. It was sold
in September 2010 for over $14,350. According to RR Auction, the lawsuit
mentioned above was only one of the activities that the future US president had
on his agenda for that day. He also traded his old buggy to a carriage maker
and managed to write quite a few checks. The document is certainly a part of
history that is both unique and remarkable.
