Unique Abraham Lincoln signed check sold by RR Auction
Back in September 2010 RR Auction managed to sell a check signed by none other than Abraham Lincoln. The Springfield Marine & Fire Insurance Company document was not only signed but also filled out by the American President. Dated on January 12, 1860 the $5 check is a testament of the kind of items RR Auction has managed to bring in front of collectors. The document is all the more valuable since it was signed on quite a busy day for Lincoln, one in which he even had to deal with a lawsuit.
The check in question was nicely cloth matted and framed by the Gallery of History and a picture of Abraham Lincoln was added so that it reached 14 17.25 inches. At the time it was sold by RR Auction, the document was in fine condition, had a cancellation cut above the signature, a punch hole to the left edge and scarce, light soiling.
As it was mentioned before, the check was signed on an important day for the future American President, as he also had to appear in court for a lawsuit. Apart from the lawsuit, he also traded in his old buggy to a carriage maker and wrote a few checks on that same day. The lawsuit that he took part in was intended by the State of Illinois against the Illinois Central Railroad. As it turns out, Lincoln defended the Illinois Central Railroad against accusations of failure to pay taxes in 1857.
Given its rarity and the story behind it, concerning the lawsuit and other activities of the future US President, the check was sold in September 2010 for over $14,350. Additional details on this item and any other past or future lot sales can be found on RR Auction’s social media, or on their website which is regularly updated.
