When it comes to popular culture, gangsters, movie and music icons and even historical figures, RR Auction prides itself with an incredibly wide range of memorabilia and remarkable items that they have managed to pass on to collectors all over the world. The Boston based auction house is famous for being able to satisfy even the most demanding customers with their monthly lot sales which include rare and exceptional items.

This is the case of a deposition they sold a few years back. The deposition belongs to an alleged loan shark named Christopher O’Connor. As it turns out, he was arrested by infamous lawman Eugene Canevari and, according to RR Auction, the lawsuit was a result of an undercover sting.

As it is stated by RR Auction, this lawsuit isn’t the only one that Canevari was responsible for. He had over 2 years of investigative work as a NYPD detective in the Manhattan Homicide Squad. He also worked in the Waterfront Squad which is actually mentioned in the deposition; he was part of the Bomb Squad and Radical Squad. During his time as an investigator (1927 – 1952), he also gathered an impressive collection of documents and images.

According to RR Auction, the lawsuit or, better said the deposition in question helped in convicting Christopher O’Connor. It is a 37 pages, 8 X 10.25 inches typed deposition, in overall fine condition, except for the regular document wear. In part, the deposition reads: “Have you ever been convicted of any crime? A. Well, I was fined $500. Q. You were fined? A. $500. Q. For what? A. For lending out money. Q. Loan sharking? A. Yes. Q. Did you plead guilty at that time? A. I forget now what it was.”

The document also came with two newspaper clippings that detailed Canevari’s entire operation. As it turns out, he spent “two weeks on the water front, half-shaven and in work-clothes, mingling with stevedores. Most of this time…was spent either in O’Connor’s company or in trailing him.”
