It was only in July 2013 when they sold a deposition given
by Eugene Canevari related to the infamous mobster Dutch Schultz who was
assassinated by the Mafia in 1935. According to RR Auction, the lawsuit this
deposition was used for referenced an incident that Canevari had with Schultz
on June 18, 1931. The deposition is a two page, 8 X 13 inches large and despite
the expected document wear it was sold for $264. The two sheets are joined at
the top by a paperclip.
As it was stated by RR Auction, the lawsuit took place in
1935 and the deposition was given on 14 February 1935. In part, the deposition
reads “Mr. Troy asked me about
taking the money from Flegenheimer at the station house on June 18,
1931…Flegenheimer had told me that I didn’t have any right to take that money
from him, and I insisted that I did. I remember hearing Salke say that
Flegenheimer told him to take the money and let him run.”
As it turns out,
on June 18 Shultz was involved in a gunfight in New York with two detectives,
Julius Salke and Stephen DiRosa. The gunfight ended with Shultz arrest and he
was found carrying $19,000 with which he tried to bribe his way out of that
situation. However, the money was confiscated by Canevari when the detectives
brought Shultz back to the station.
