1935 Eugene Canevari deposition
RR Auction is known
for being able to sell impressive collections related to mobsters, outlaws and
lawmen. Over the past few years, the Boston based auction house has managed to
bring to light some of the rarest and most remarkable items in this genre. They
have auctioned off anything from jewelry, documents and even signed pictures
that collectors all over the world would have loved to have.
This 1935 deposition given by Eugene Canevari is no exception when
it comes to valuable, Mafia – related items sold by RR Auction. According to RR
Auction, the lawsuit it was used in was against Dutch Schultz, an infamous
mobster of the time. As it turns out, he was involved in bootlegging and the
numbers racket and he tried bribing his way out of an arrest. In fact, as it is
stated by RR Auction, the lawsuit actually focused on this attempt to bribe
detectives Stephen DiRosa and Julius Salke. Eugene Canevari was the one who
confiscated the $19,000 that were found on Dutch Schultz (born Arthur
Flegenheimer) when he was brought to the station by the two detectives.
As it is mentioned by
RR Auction, the lawsuit didn’t give the authorities the chance to put Schultz
behind bars for his actions, as he was assassinated by the Mafia in 1935. The
document, in fine condition, was auctioned off in June 2013. In part, it reads “Mr. Troy asked me about taking the money
from Flegenheimer at the station house on June 18, 1931…Flegenheimer had told
me that I didn’t have any right to take that money from him, and I insisted
that I did. I remember hearing Salke say that Flegenheimer told him to take the
money and let him run.”
According to RR Auction, the lawsuit this deposition was used in ended
in 1935. The document came from Eugene Canevari’s
collection. He was born and raised in New York and on a first
name basis with most of the mobsters he later put behind bars. During his 25
year career he managed to gather quite an impressive number of documents and
collectibles.
