Last chance on RR Auction’s Olympic Medals lot sale

This January, RR Auction is holding one of its most impressive events to date. The Olympic Winner’s Medals auction concludes on January 18 and is probably one of the most extensive lot sales of its kind. The featured items are highly valuable, it not even extremely rare, which is why anyone interested should check out the online catalogue and view the stars of this collection.

One of the items included in the auction is a Lake Placid Winter Olympics Torch, estimated at over $30,000. This is, without a doubt, one of the rarest items in the entire collection. It is made of bronze colored leather and metal, measuring 8.5 inches in width (at its widest point) and 28.5 inches in length. The torch was designed by Don McFarland and manufactured by Cleanweld Turner. While the torch has quite a modern design, it surely includes elements that somehow evoke ancient Greece. There is a silver ring at the center of the handle which is engraved with Lake Placid’s emblem and the inscription “XII Olympic Winter Games, Lake Placid, 1980”. With the burner bowl still in place and the leather elements perfectly preserved, this is certainly a remarkable item that collectors should not miss. One of the main reasons this Winter Olympics torch is so valuable is the fact that there were only 140 made. The flame was lit in Olympia at the end of January and it travelled to Athens and then to Langley, Virginia. The American part of the torch bearing process was carried out by 52 people and the relay was meant to retrace the American Revolution Bicentennial trail.

Another highly valuable item available in this auction is a set of 10 badges from the Sapporo 1972 Winter Olympics. The badges are made of silvered bronze and they all measure 25 X 60 mm and 43 gm. The front of the badges bears the Sapporo Games logo above the Olympic rings as well as the text “Sapporo ‘72” while the reverse features a pin and raised text in Japanese. This impressive set of badges was estimated at over $25,000 but it is expected to be sold for much more.

The auction also includes quite a large number of Winner’s medals, participation medals and even plaquettes or other rare collectibles. The full lot can be browsed on RR Auction’s website where interested parties can even place their bids. The auction house also keeps its social media regularly updated for anyone interested in upcoming events and remarkable rarities.
