RR Auction: New lot sale features incredible Winter Olympics medals

RR Auction is starting the New Year in style and they seem to be set on maintaining the record breaking sales they’ve had in 2017. The Boston based auction house is currently hosting a lot sale that features Winter Olympics memorabilia, including winners’ medals and Olympic torches. Interested collectors should browse the online catalogue as soon as possible because the auction concludes on January 18.

One of the remarkable items that collectors can purchase in this lot sale is the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics torch. This is considered to be quite a rare item, which makes the fact that it has been estimated at a staggering $25,000 understandable. The torch is made of aluminum, it has maple handle which is emblazoned with pictograms of ten Winter Olympics sports. It measures 23.5 inches in length and the top aluminum carries the inscription “XV Olympic Winter Games Calgary Alberta Canada 1998”. On top of that, the ball at the bottom which is also made of aluminum is inscribed with the Olympic motto “Citiu. Altius. Fortius”. The torch was designed by the National research Council of Canada and it was especially made so that it would resemble the Calgary Tower. The main reason why this is such a rare item is the fact that there were only approximately 150 such torches made.

Another quite impressive item brought forward by RR Auction in this lot sale is a 1936 Garmisch Winter Olympics silver winner’s medal. It measures 100 mm and 325 gm and it is perhaps one of the rarest Olympic medals ever sold, since only 36 were minted (the Garmisch Winter Olympics only hosted 755 athletes who competed in the games). Additionally, the medals that were awarded during the Garmisch Winter Olympics are among the largest ever awarded prize medals in the history of the Olympic Games. This particular medal was designed by Richard Klein and struck by Deschler and Sohn of Munich, Germany. It carries a “990 Silver” stamp on the edge and the front features a female riding a triga on an arch above winter sports equipment while carrying a victory wreath. The bottom part of the front has the “Garmisch – Panrtenkirchen” raised text. This winner’s silver medal has been estimated at over $35,000.

Anyone interested in bidding on these items or on the many other collectibles available in this particular lot sale should certainly check out RR Auction’s website as well as their social media for constant updates.
